Bhai Dooj is one of the most celebrated festivals in our country. On this day people celebrate the bond between the brother and sister. In different places of the country, it is celebrated with different names like Bhau Beej in Maharashtra, Bhai Tika in Nepal, Bhathru Dwitiya Bhau-deej and Bhai Phota in Bengal and Ningol Chakuba in Manipur.
On this day sisters pray for their brother`s good health and happy life. Brothers also give gifts to their sisters and show their love and affection towards them. There are much variety of sweets and dishes prepared for this festival.
This year the festival is celebrated on 21st October 2017 as per the Hindu calendar. Usually, this festival is celebrated on the second day of Kartika Mas. The timings for this pooja for this year are from 1:31 pm to 3:49 pm.
The story behind this celebration is that One day Yamaraj visited his sister Yami. She welcomed him with a garland, Aarti and put tilak on his forehead. After seeing this he felt overwhelmed and announced those brothers who receive this kind of rituals on this day will be blessed with a long and wealthy life. Since then this festival is celebrated as Yamadvitiya or Yamawitheya.

Jainism has another story associated with this festival as well. The founder of Jainism, Mahavir attained and cut contact from his family, his brother was very disturbed and missed Mahavir a lot. Later with the help of his sister Sudarshana to get him back home. So, many people tribute this festival for brother and sister bonding.
In many places, this festival is celebrated in a grand scale. Sisters put tilak to their brothers and tie Kallava on his wrist. If sisters do not have the brother they offer pooja to Moon. Sisters also light a lamp and place it in the southern direction. After this pooja, they offer sweets to brother and many dishes prepared for them specially.
