Why Milestones On Indian Roads Have Different Colours? This Is The Reason
While traveling, we often observe milestones on the roadsides. They let us know how far our destination is. But have you ever thought the different milestones that you see along different roads in India have different colors? They aren’t colored randomly. There is a purpose and it represents a certain thing.
What does this milestone color indicate? How much do you really know about them?
While the information on the milestones tells you how far your destination is from a certain point, the color code on them tells the kind of road or area you are driving on. The color code varies for highways like the National Highway, the State Highway, the streets of the district and the village roads.
From yellow, green and black to orange there are four main colors that we see the milestones. Here we decoded all the colors of milestones you spot on the Indian roads.
1. Yellow Colored Strip:
While driving on the road, if you see a milestone with the yellow color strip on the upper part of it, then it is understood that you are traveling on a National Highway (NH). This means that yellow painted milestones are imposed on India’s National highways only.
2. Green Colored Strip:
When you see a green color strip on the upper part of it, then it means that you are not on the National Highway but on the State Highway (SH). In India, if the roads are constructed by the State government, then green colored milestones are used and the maintenance of these roads is done entirely by the State.
3. Black Blue Colored Strip:
When you see a milestone with a black, blue or white color strip on the upper part of it, then it is understood that you entered in a big city or district. At the same time maintenance of these roads comes under district or we can say that these roads are maintained only by the administration of the district.
4. Orange Colored Strip:
When you see a milestone with an orange color stripe on the upper part of it, then it means that you entered in the rural area/village. This strip also represents Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana.
