Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai is known for polarizing people over sensitive issues such as girl education and women’s rights, is breaking the Internet for a completely different reason. She is also known as the forerunner of women empowerment.

Malala fell victim to the savage world of moral policing. She heads and instigated a debate with her attire. Malala was clicked wearing jeans, which divided the social media users. It all started with an unverified picture circulating online which shows Malala sporting skinny jeans and scarf, walking on the streets of London.

In a matter few minutes, many welcomed the change and said that she looked like any other normal girl, on the other hand, the floodgates to some utterly demoralizing and distasteful comments opened up. They considered it shameful for a Pakistani girl.

On the top of everything, a few users said it looked like a picture of porn-star Mia Khalifa and not of Malala Yousafzai. A Facebook user commented on the image that apparently shows Yousafzai wearing jeans, heels and a bomber jacket: “I thought she was Mia Khalifa.” The photo appeared in a newspaper in Pakistan, a journalist tweeted.

Another user said on Facebook “mission completed from Pathan to secular Oxfordian (sic)” while another user called the activist a “foreign agent” who won’t be accepted by Pakistan.

However, hundreds of other responses drowned out the clamber of the trolls and defended Yousafzai’s right to wear what she wants. Some lamented that it was a sad state of affairs that there was a controversy over the Nobel peace laureates clothes.

Yousafzai, 20, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014, alongside Indian Kailash Satyarthi, for their struggle against the suppression of children and young people and for the right of all children to education. Apart from the being the youngest Nobel prize winner, she is also the author of ‘I am Malala’ that documents her fight against the militant group and her journey from a remote valley in Pakistan to Britain.

Malala had moved to Birmingham after she was shot by the Taliban gunmen in 2012 while she was returning home from school. She is known as an advocate for girls’ education and had also talked about her desires to return to her country and become a politician. Malala is currently attending Oxford University to study, politics, Philosophy and Economics.
