Advocate held for filming women at Delhi Saket Mall with shoe camera

A 33-year-old Noida-based lawyer working for a legal process outsourcing firm was arrested at Saket’s DLF Place mall on Saturday evening for allegedly filming women wearing short skirts and dresses through a spy camera tucked between the lace of his right shoe. The accused, Ashish Sharma was caught in the act by the store manager at DLF Place, who spotted him moving suspiciously around women, especially those wearing mini-skirts and short dresses and trying to get his right foot close to them. Sharma tried to flee when the manager raised an alarm but was caught by the mall’s security personnel.

Police have accessed CCTV footage of the mall and recorded the statements of two eyewitnesses, store manager Sunil Arora and chief security in-charge Sarbajeet. Ashish Sharma filmed women secretly at the same store on September 17, according to officials investigating the crime. Police recovered atleast 10 obscene video clips from his spy camera and mobile phone.

Police are now trying to ascertain if he was using the recorded videos for commercial purposes or only for personal consumption. “His motive is still unclear. Even though he claims he did it for personal reasons, we are trying to ascertain if he sold them to websites,” a police officer said. Police, however, were going through his social media accounts and mobile phones to check if he circulated or posted the videos online.

Police sources said Sharma admitted during questioning he got the idea of filming women from porn sites. “Sharma said he used to watch porn websites and few weeks ago, he decided to record some obscene videos. Around 45 days ago, he purchased the spy camera online for Rs 1, 100,” the sources added. “He spent around three to four hours in the mall on September 17, but recorded video for five minutes only and transferred it to his phone,” the sources said. “We are planning to search Sharma’s home and office to look into his laptop/computer,” a police officer said.

“Sharma, a resident of Faridabad, was arrested after he was caught red-handed by store manager Sunil Arora. “On the basis of Arora’s complaint, a case was registered under sections 354-C (watching or capturing an image of a woman engaging in a private act in circumstances where she would usually have the explanation of not being observed either by the perpetrator or by any other person at the behest of the perpetrator) and 354-D (stalking) of the IPC at Saket police station. Sharma was arrested and later released on bail,” DCP (South) Prem Nath said.
