Anna Hazare has received an anonymous letter which threatens to kill him on January 26th, on Republic Day.  The sender of the letter has also alleged that Anna Hazare has earned a lot of money and asked Hazare to declare him his heir, a senior police official said on Saturday.

Anna Hazare is a well known social activist who led movements to promote rural development, increase government transparency, and investigate and punish corruption in public life.

The hand-written letter was sent around four days back to Hazare’s office at his native Ralegan Siddhi village in Ahmednagar district, Additional Superintendent of Police Pankaj Deshmukh said. “In the letter, the sender has threatened that January 26 will be the last day of Hazare,” Deshmukh added.

This is not first time where Hazare received threatening letter, earlier too he has received similar anonymous threat letters. Hazare’s personal assistant Shyam Pathade said, “This could be the tenth such letter received by our office and Anna has chosen not to comment on such letters as he does not fall prey to such threats.”

After this threatening letter, the police has increased the security for Anna Hazare and are reviewing the security details on daily basis, said Pankaj Deshmukh. This letter brought Anna Hazare’s followers into tension and the Police Department is trying to find out who has sent this threatening letter.

ASP Deshmukh added that police are trying to ascertain whether it is an act of mischief. However, a case has been registered against unidentified person in this regard.

Anna Hazare is an ex-military officer who served the country from 1960 to 1975. Though this kind of letters would be common for such personalities, proper care has to be taken by Police department for not giving the anonymous chances to do so.
