COP21: All Eyes On PM Modi For New Climate Deal

Now the whole world is worried about climate change. After two weeks of intense negotiations at Paris climate change talks, Paris is now all set to announce a deal that would usher in a new era of Renewable energy. But the next 24 hours will be crucial from the Indian perspective as India continues to push for the principle of Common But Differentiated Responsibilities CBDR.

Environment minister Prakash Javadekar has already met US Secretary of State John Kerry twice even as citizens from both India and the United States urge their leadership to commit to clean energy.

In a poll conducted across 12 cities in India by New Delhi-based MDRA, 90% of Indians find Climate Change a real threat and 75% want the government to switch to clean energy to fight it. Only 15% support the government’s position that it needs coal as a cheaper energy source to fuel growth. Alaphia Zoyab of Avaaz that commissioned the survey, says, “Indian citizens could not be clearer, they want India to transition to 100% clean energy. With the Paris climate talks on the brink, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has a strong and undeniable mandate to deliver an ambitious deal for the people of India.”

Earlier on Thursday, civil society groups met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to deliver a petition signed by over 3.6 million people worldwide urging their respective governments to push for a 100% clean energy regime. Late on Thursday night, a new, shorter, draft incorporating many key issues raised by India like “sustainable lifestyle” was unveiled after intense negotiations.

India had earlier attacked the developed countries for adopting “extravagant” lifestyles compared to its “need-based consumption” and has been asserting that only “sustainable” lifestyles can mitigate the climate change challenge.

Sources in the Indian government said that although many issues raised by the country have found a place, there are still some issues that needed to be worked out. All eyes are now on World leaders to live up to the expectations of millions of people around the world who are vulnerable to the affects of Climate Change.
