Himachal Board of Education came into existence in the year 1969. The main aim of this board is to recommend syllabus, courses of instruction, and text books and also to conduct examinations for school education in Himachal Pradesh. At present the Himachal board conducts examination for both 10th and 12th Class. Every year there are approximately 5 lakh candidates who sit for the HP Board examinations. Presently more than 8000 schools are affiliated with this board.

In the early year the HP Board started with minimum staffs of 34 officials which have subsequently increased to 438.
