Imran Khan Predicts Victory For His Party In Pakistan Election

A leading politician in opposition, Imran Khan of Pakistan told the news agencies that he was sure that his opponents will lose in the next coming general elections due to the fact they have a track record.

When asked regarding the fairness of the elections to be held, Mr. Khan dismissed concerns relating to it.

“The status quo parties are suddenly saying the elections won’t be free and fair. The reason is all the opinion polls show the PTI is surging… so they’re already seeing the writing on the wall.”

The sympathizers of PML-N party and several human rights groups allege that the Pakistani military is trying to “engineer” the outcome of the elections that would help Mr. Khan’s PTI party to win.

The coming elections are primarily seen as a competition between Imran Khan’s PTI, and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif family dominated PML-N.

According to Mr. Khan, his party’s campaigns was aimed to make Pakistan rise again.

The main policy issue of Imran Khan’s party would be to fight corruption. This comes in his support positively as his rival, Mr. Sharif was recently sentenced to 10 years in jail over corruption charges by an anti-corruption court earlier this month. The investigation into the charges was much sought after by Mr. Khan.

So, Mr. Khan believes that the result of the investigation might have brought great awareness of ill-effects of corruption.  “That’s how a country doesn’t have the money for its expenditure, it doesn’t have money for human development.”

But according to some analysts, the actual reason for Mr. Sharif’s being proven guilty was that he confronted with the Pakistani army over foreign and security policies while he was in power.

Thus, Mr. Sharif says that the military is directly engaged in “pre-poll rigging” so that his party does not get re-elected. The military has controlled Pakistan’s politics for nearly half of its existence.

Many PML-N candidates have put up the allegation that they were asked by the intelligence services to leave Sharif’s party. Also, the journalists say that they were given instructions many times not to report stories sympathetic to Mr. Sharif.

The military in Pakistan does not accept their claim of them being involved in politics.

Imran Khan’s supporters during their rally in Lahore said that Mr. Sharif’s claims were an outright attempt to distract their attention from the corruption allegations.

Many voters see Mr. Khan as a “change” candidate. The difference between him and others is that he does not come from a political dynasty and also that his party never gained power till now, so better give him a chance.

But many times he has been criticized for including such candidates into the party who are called as “electable” – those politicians who defect to some or the other parties due to their wealth and land and are able to get a good number of voters whoever they stand for.

The pre-polls suggest that there might be a hung parliament where no party gets a clear majority, but according to Mr. Khan, he might have to form a coalition government if he was to win.

But basically, he puts the rule as not aligning with any of the major parties, namely, the PML-N or the PPP, led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and his father, Asif Ali Zardari.

“If you have a coalition with them, you defeat the whole purpose of coming into power.”
