Kolkata’s Sealdah railway station is speculated to be as the transit point for child trafficking. Seldah Railway station has now become a child-friendly railway station as it has turned out as the place where many many trafficked children and girls are brought before they are further sent for “business” to other states. The railway station is serving as the best asylum and refuge for the trafficked children who are lost in distress with a 24×7 assistance at the Sealdah railway station.

Authorities claim they have been monitoring over the illegal merchandising of children’s with a patrolling team of 12 members. The patrolling team would keep an eye over the illegal immigration and playing a indispensable role in rescuing the childrens from unlawful trafficking. Rajib Haldar of Child In Need Institute (CINI) said “The Railways have agreed to make 20 railway stations in India child-friendly ones, out of which three are in West Bengal. Sealdah is the first one in the state where we have starting implementing the standard operating protocol for protection of children.”

The second railway station of West Bengal which has been chosen as the child friendly was New Jalpaiguri station after Sealdah as a part of the mission to make 20 railway stations child friendly. At Sealdah Railway station 24×7 assistance booth kiosk is being operated by the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in collaboration with the Women and Child Development Ministry and the railway board and is facilitated by the Childline India Foundation.

For the alerts of the missing or trafficked children Union Government of India Women and Child Development Ministry has launched the childline will be operating with the helpline number 1098. To provide shelter to the trafficked and rescued kids Indian Railways has been offered a plot near the railway station. Child In Need Institute (CINI) and the authorities would look on for the parents immediately after giving shelter to the rescued children.

Rescued children’s are provided with the facilities like food, education, health and counselling at the shelters where the Child In Need Institute (CINI) NGO has its own shelter for the rescued kids with a capacity to accommodate about 50 kids day and night. Concerned authorities would send back the rescued childrens to their parents and homes after proper investigation and consent of Child Welfare Committee.

Vendors hawkers, porters and others who have been indulged in the child trafficking are being counselled to ensure that children do not fall prey to the trafficking in the future and their safety inside the station. These new measures which have been taken up and adopted by the concerned authorities is surely going to yields better results where the common people would come out to report about anything which they find wrong or unusual with the helpline number 1098. Added to this these measures would bring down the maximum possibilities and number of child trafficking instances across the nation as the most of the such unlawful incidents are believed to be pass through railways stations.
