Kerala Girl Took Facebook To Announce ‘No’ To Wedding After Demanding Dowry

A girl from Kerala took to Facebook and created a stir on social media after announcing that her wedding has been called off. The reason is that her fiance’s family demanded dowry. Remya Ramachandran, who hails from Thrissur in Kerala, said in her FB post last week that the demands for dowry started after the engagement.

“Before the engagement they had said they wanted only me. Post the engagement, they demanded 50 sovereigns of gold and 5 lakh rupees,” Remya said. She said she cancelled the wedding as she was against the practice of dowry and because she believed that “buying such an unreliable man and his family is a loss.”

She wrote in Malayalam and here is the translation. “To all those asking for the date of my wedding, the family that before the engagement had said that they only wanted me, post the engagement, they were demanding 50 sovereigns of gold and 5 lakh rupees. As I am staunchly against dowry and because I believe that buying anything for a man and his family who are so unreliable is a loss, I don’t want to continue with the marriage.”

Hence, she received several congratulatory messages after her post went viral. “This is a bold decision. Let this encourage other women too,” said a comment. A few days later, in another post, Remya thanked everyone who supported her.
