Land Acquisition Bill Latest News Highlights: Loksabha is going to take up the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Amendment Bill, today which was initially brought as an ordinance, amends the existing law passed by the former UPA regime in 2013. The current amended Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Amendment Bill is going to replace the ordinance promulgated by the government in December last year.

UPA Government Ordinance Has Been Changed by NDA Government

The need for obtaining the consent of landowners was removed by the BJP-led NDA Government in the new version of the bill, the BJP-led NDA Government has removed the need for obtaining the consent of Social Economic Assessment (SIA) for acquiring land under certain categories.

BJP-led NDA Government assured that it was ready to consider UPA opposition suggestions and go the extra mile to prevent any injustice to farmers and to strengthen their hands. While there has been immense pressure is being caused by the opposition parties stating this amendment as injustice which was favorable in the year 2013 when the UPA led governance passed the legislation. BJP-led NDA Government has formally made public that the ordinance making significant changes in the Land Act including removal of consent clause for acquiring land for five categories –Industrial Corridors, Public Private Partnership projects, Rural Infrastructure, Affordable Housing and Defence.

Opposition parties have been condemning this initiative and new amendment of NDA governance and have been discovered staging protests. The chief opposing party in Loksabha Congress has been strongly contradicting BJP-led NDA Government changes to the prior law. In a protest Congress party called ‘Zameen Wapsi Andolan’ at Jantar Mantar to oppose the Land Acquisition Ordinance raising a strong voice to their objections to the bill.

Land Acquisition Ordinance bill was opposed by many other political parties at national level such as Trinamool Congress (TMC), Shiv Sena and Lok Janshakti Party stating that it violates the primary rights of the Land Owners. Social activist and Gandhian Anna Hazare had also launched a protesting the BJP-led NDA Governments stands and policies over framing a new version of the bill and he controverted that BJP-led NDA Governments promise of ‘achhe din’ during the Lok Sabha polls last year.

Although the upper house Rajya Sabha would take up two bills to replace two ordinances, the Mines and Minerals Development & Regulation Amendment Bill, 2015 and Motor Vehicles Amendment Bill, 2015 which were passed by Lok Sabha last week. There are two more bills pending related to hiking FDI limit in insurance sector and allocation of coal blocks through open bidding.
