Lord Shiva Is The Greatest Environmentalist in the World, Says A Botanist At Indian Science Congress

Lord Shiva, who is regarded as the ‘destroyer of the cosmos’, was also possibly the greatest environmentalist of the world, according to botanist Akhilesh K. Pandey, who was to present a paper in this regard at the Indian Science Congress in Mysore.

Pandey failed to turn up at the 103rd Indian Science Congress on Wednesday as he suffered an unfortunate accident while on a staircase and could not present the lecture. The attendees, however, did get the opportunity to listen to a lecture by additional commissioner of Kanpur, Rajeev Sharma, who presented a paper on Tuesday about blowing the shankh to achieve health and wellness.

The selection of Dr Akhilesh Pandey’s paper for the environmental sciences segment triggered a massive controversy on social media with many accusing the organisers as well as the hosts at the University of Mysore of promoting a non-scientific subject in pursuit of a “larger political agenda”.

The controversy comes against the backdrop of a similar row last year, when a paper presented at the Congress held in Mumbai (a session titled “Ancient Sciences through Sanskrit” dwelt on aviation technologies in Maharshi Bharadwaja’s Vaimanika Shastra) drew sharp reactions from the scientific community after it claimed an ancient Indian sage had given detailed guidelines for making an aircraft, long before Wright brothers.

Clarifying on the controversy, Akhilesh K. Pandey, who is a PhD in botany and has several awards and citations to his name said, “My absence had nothing to do with the controversy. I injured my leg and that’s why I couldn’t come.”

Lord Shiva Is The Greatest Environmentalist in the World

The main objective of his my paper titled Lord Shiva: The Greatest Environmentalist in the World is to promote environmental conservation. “The objective of the paper is to spread awareness among students regarding how ancient Indian literature was responsible for conserving the environment. Lord Shiva’s family used to use animals such as peacock, rat and Nandi for conveyance and thus coexisted peacefully with animals,” Pandey explained.

“So what if my paper has nothing to do with science. What is science? Today’s fiction is tomorrow’s science. Fiction is the mother of invention,” he added. “It is important that people around us understand the importance of conserving plants and animals today”.

Accusing the media of “making a mountain out of a molehill”, Dr Gangadhar Mishra said, “Whether there is science or not in the paper can be challenged when the speaker presents it.”
