As everyone left her alone at 80, the dancer lives in poverty without anyone help. She is spending her days on charity. No one came forward seeing her poor condition and she can’t even walk properly and searching for help. Her photograph is here with the postal stamp she was honored in 1962 after performing in Parliament. She has lost count of medals she has won. She was honored by S. Radhakrishnan to R. Venkataraman, and Prime Ministers from Jawaharlal Nehru to Indira Gandhi.

She is staying in a ‘Punjabi’ locality in Delhi’s Rajouri Garden and she is no more a Madrasi woman. She has to her name a plethora of accolades and awards – bestowed upon by India’s Prime Ministers Nehru and Indira Gandhi – that have decayed over the course of time, telling a tale of utter neglect and disrespect. She was very talented in many aspects like music, teaching, etc.

She deserves more than the country assumes. Tara Balgopal also worked in a respectable post of Reader in English at Delhi University’s Rajdhani College. She was also the first Indian teacher to conduct UG courses on All India Radio in 1963. Post her retirement, she didn’t receive her due benefits by the University, against which she has an open case in court. The University claims that Ms. Balgopal’s file was lost.
