Nowhere In Purana’s Said To Burst Firecrackers On Diwali

‘Diwali’, is one of the biggest and famous festival for Hindus in India. Especially, Diwali is well known for Crackers. Crackers are not good for health and the environment. People waste a lot of money on buying crackers. So, from this Diwali, let us avoid crackers and spend that money for the needy, homeless and the poor. Let us take an oath and make their lives brighter. Many of them feel sad shunning crackers and it is impossible.

Light a lamp not a cracker on Diwali

This Diwali is a bit special to the people in Bihar because the festival is coming soon after announcing the Bihar Assembly election results. Irrespective of who wins the elections, crackers will be burnt. Diwali is basically a festival of lighting. It is also the time when Goddess Lakshmi descends on earth and blesses every dwelling and commercial establishment with prosperity and knowledge.

Hindu ethics never said that crackers being burnt to celebrate Lord Rama’s return to his kingdom after having stayed in exile for 14 years. Burning crackers is a later addition on Diwali and it is most likely a tradition that was adopted for its commercial value. So let us change the way of lighting by helping poor people and light their lives. Now we shall discuss the damages caused by burning crackers.

Help poor people on Diwali

Apart from the ethics and history, recent studies show that the crackers are made using large amounts of sulphur dioxide and nitrogen fumes. This heavy doses of adding sulphur dioxide and nitrogen fumes in the crackers will damage the environment and the quality, purity of air that we breathe. The effects of the pollution and the noise emitted by the crackers also takes its toll on animals.

Even plants will be affected of extreme air pollution. According to the survey conducted by World Health Organization (WHO), Delhi is the most polluted city in the world with the highest concentration of PM 2.5 which is considered as danger. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee had tested firecracker samples recently and found most of them to be flouting the Explosives Rules 2008, as their manufacturers did not mention the chemical composition on the packages.

Avoid burning crackers on this Diwali

It sometimes feels that Diwali is no more about the message of right over wrong or about seeking blessings from the Goddess of Wealth for more wealth and prosperity in our lives but a competition to prove who can spend more on gifts, decorations, card parties, or who can burn more crackers. Instead of spending a lot of money on crackers, please help the poor who are not even having food to eat.

The light on their faces would brighten the environment and their lives as well. Let’s make this Diwali pollution free and let us bring happiness in the faces of poor and the needy. Happy Diwali.
