New Delhi: An all-party meet was held which was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and opposition parties. The opposition parties questioned the logic behind limiting the schedule of monsoon session to 18 days only despite the fact that there is a huge workload. The parties expressed their will that they all wanted “discussion and not disruption” and they did not want the House to be adjourned at any cost. The day slated for the beginning of the monsoon session is tomorrow and will continue till August 10.

The session will oversee the passing of eighteen new bills in a total of 18 working days. The government wants to make it sure to pass the Triple Talaq Bill which has been passed by the Lok Sabha and an approval from the Rajya Sabha is needed to complete the bill passing process. Another important activity is the election of the Rajya Sabha deputy chairman that is also slated to be held in this period.

Referring to the issue of election of the Rajya Sabha chairman, the Union Minister Vijay Goel quoted Prime Minister by saying “we want all issues to be discussed and brought to the house”. The minister also stated that the government wants a general consensus on the post of the Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Vijay Goel, Congress leaders Anand Sharma and Ghulam Nabi Azad, NCP leader Sharad Pawar, and CPI leader D Raja.

The meeting which includes all political parties is a norm before every session of parliament, in which the central government tries to reach a consensus over the goals to be reached and for this, it seeks the cooperation of all parties which in turn will prove to be a move that eases the process inside the house. But despite such initiatives, the House saw very little work done during the second half of the budget session due to disruption from the opposition side.

The leader of the opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said that in the strategy session held yesterday, all the 14 opposition parties have reached a consensus that they all want the parliament to function. And if there are any kind of disturbances after this, then the government will be held responsible for the disruption and not the opposition.

Yesterday, 14 opposition parties held a strategy session after which Leader of the Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad said that they arrived at a consensus that they want “parliament to function”. If after this, there are disturbances, then the government will be responsible for it, not the opposition, he told reporters.
