Punjab Government Comdemns Closing Schools After Dr Abdul Kalam’s Demise

Daljeet Singh, Education Minister of Punjab state government has condemned closing the schools across the state after the demise of the former president of India. The nation which is mourning the death of former people’s president of India and the missile man of India Dr Abdul Kalam, who passed away after suffering a massive cardiac
arrest at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Shillong, Meghalaya while delivering a lecture on Monday.

Punjab Minister Says Against The Spirit of Teachings of Dr A P J Abdul Kalam.

Union government of India which is declared a 7 days mourning after the great loss of the India’ beloved intellect, leader Dr APJ Abdul Kalam has called out a national holiday as a mark of respect to the departed soul. Following the call of union government many of the state government’s are following the suit. Some schools in Punjab remained closed on Tuesday despite the Punjab government not declaring any holiday paying tributes to the great statesmen and youth icon although the Punjab government  didn’t declare any holiday.

The state government has issued notice to the schools seeking an explanation for closing and declaring holidays despite state government’s declaring any holiday. School teachers of these schools claimed that the management declared holiday following the TV news which was reporting that Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi holiday at the national level for Tuesday.

Daljeet Singh Cheema, Education Minister of Punjab said “Declaring an off day was against the spirit of the teachings of Dr A P J Abdul Kalam. The state government declared no off for schools (on Tuesday).” Office of Director (education), Balbir Singh Dhol issued letters to the closed schools stating that “When I die, do not declare a holiday, but work some extra.”

Schools Must Sumit Detailed Report, Director of Educations

Letter of the Director of State Education, Balbir Singh Dhol suggested all teachers of the schools in Punjab to spend some extra hours preaching students for the next seven days spending about the life and achievements of Kalam. The letter of the Director of school education also states that no holiday was declared by the department and if any school was closed it was at their responsibility of principal/headmistress. Hence the school heads should submit a detailed report on absent staff should be forwarded to the department.

Education Minister of Punjab, Daljeet Singh Cheema said “It was against the spirit of Kalam saab to declare a holiday and so, we did not. There was some confusion and as per the report I have with me, it seems a few DCs had declared a holiday in a few schools. We will be organising a lecture on EDUSAT to tell students about Kalam and for next seven days teachers have been asked to devote extra time to tell students about Kalam in morning assemblies and classes” while addressing a media.
