Putin Warns Against Any Further Attempt To Strike Syria, Says Violation Will Cause Chaos in International Ties

The President of Russia has expressed concerns to his Iranian counterpart, President Hassan Rouhani, that any further attack by the Western allies in Syria would inevitably lead to chaos in international relations.

During a phone conversation on Sunday, both the leaders held a similar opinion that “this illegal action seriously damages the prospects for a political settlement in Syria,” Russian news agency RIA quoted the Kremlin press service as saying.

Both the Presidents were discussing the ongoing situation in Syria after the United States, France and Britain launched coordinated attacks on Syria’s chemical facilities.

“Putin stressed that if such actions, committed in violation of the UN Charter, continue, it will inevitably lead to chaos in international relations,” RIA added.

US, French and British forces on Saturday, had targeted three sites in Syria, which, according to the US President Donald Trump are associated with the facilities installed for chemical weapons by Bashar al-Assad, Syria’s president.

The alleged use by Syrian regime’s chemical weapons in Douma last week resulted in deaths of scores of civilians. The coordinated attacks were in response to the Chemical Weapons use.

The United States warned that it is completely locked and loaded to make air strikes on Syria if any chemical attacks occur.

During an emergency session at the United Nations Security Council on Saturday, Nikki Haley, US ambassador to the United Nations, said: “If the Syrian regime uses this poisonous gas again, the United States is locked and loaded.”

Bashar al-Jaafari, Syria’s ambassador to United Nations, claimed that the attacks were an “attack on international law,” and called on the three countries to stop supporting “terrorists” in Syria.

Meanwhile, Russian President Putin has termed the attacks as an “act of aggression” and warned they could worsen the humanitarian crisis in Syria.

Only the time will tell what the strikes mean for Syria and its allies.
