Miss South Africa “Rolene Strauss” Crowned Miss World 2014

Miss South Africa has claimed the crown at this year’s Miss World competition. Miss South Africa, 22-year-old , Rolene Strauss was crowned Miss World 2014 at the contest’s glitzy final in London on Sunday, with an estimated billion viewers watching on television around the globe. Miss World 2013, Megan Young of the Philippines, gave her crown to Strauss, a fourth-year medical student.

The 10 contestants who topped the final scoreboard were, in descending order, from India, South Africa, England, Guyana, Brazil, Hungary, Kenya, United States, Mexico and Australia. Miss Hungary, Edina Kulcsar, was judged the runner-up and Miss United States, Elizabeth Safrit, came third in the 64th annual competition, contested by women from 121 countries.

Sunday’s show started with a spectacular choreographed dance routine, with all the contestants shimmering on stage in costumes inspired by their homelands, including Miss Bolivia in a colourful giant feathered headdress. Strauss had been given odds of 2/1 to win, ahead of Miss India, Koyal Rana, who was 7/1 with the bookies.

Strauss said she looked forward to continuing the legacy of Miss World CEO Julia Morley, founder of “Beauty With a Purpose,” a nonprofit that supports humanitarian projects of Miss World contestants. She highlighted her work educating girls about menstruation to keep them in school. Strauss hopes to go to business school, become a doctor and start a business focusing on women’s health.


After winning the local title in July, she said: “I am still in shock! It’s not every day that you wake up and realise that all your dreams have come true and your whole life has changed. It’s a mix of excitement, nerves and happiness.

India’s Koyal Rana made it to the top 10 of Miss World 2014 before getting eliminated. She made the country proud by winning the coveted title ‘Beauty With A Purpose’. Koyal also won the sub-title of Best Designer of the World where she was seen standing gorgeously tall in a Falguni & Shane Peacock gown. Through her journey at Miss World Organization, she was seen competing for various sub-titles like Miss Talent round, Beauty with a Purpose, Multimedia, People’s Choice, Resort Wear, Sports Challenge and many more. Koyal even managed to bag a spot in the top 5 in Beach Fashion and Multimedia competition.
