Taj Mahal Minaret’s Pinnacle Falls Off During Repair Work, ASI Blames Monkey

Agra, New Delhi: In another damage caused to the marble wonder, a pinnacle of one of the four minarets of the Taj Mahal fell off on Monday afternoon during repair work. But, interestingly the officials of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said that the pinnacle was removed because of its weak condition, blaming monkeys for it.

It may be mentioned here that three of the minarets of Taj Mahal are under chemical cleaning and a mesh structure being put up around it. The ASI is using the mud-cap therapy to save the monument from discoloring, where they cover the monument with mud and wash it off.

During this work, maintenance workers found the pinnacle of the south western minaret of Taj Mahal lying on a cleaning platform erected around the minaret. Later, the ASI officials covered up the top of the minaret with a piece of cloth.

“The pinnacle did not fall down and is lying at the platform laid around for chemical cleaning. It would be repaired and replaced soon,” said Bhuvan Vikram Singh, Superintending archaeologist, ASI, adding that monkeys could have weakened the structure.
