Tech Preference: Current Gen Teens in Hyderabad Says ‘Goodbye’ to SMS Service

Tech preferences of the teenagers in Hyderabad have been changing as there is rapid growth in the advanced technology. The smartphone has become a part of every person’s life in such an immense way that a smartphone for a teenager in the city is the most coveted electronic gadget. It won’t be an exaggeration that a small electronic gadget is directing one’s life. Mostly, the teenagers in Hyderabad are preferring to use popular social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and some other instant messaging services like WhatsApp rather than the traditional SMS service.

A new study on young teens shows that most of them own smartphones, are active on social media, and follow celebrities. Most of the teens in Hyderabad are being busy being driving with the digital world where connectivity has become the most important factor. Not all, but at the same time, some typical teenagers here relishes to fraternize face to face with friends rather than on Internet, through phone calls or the social media.

According to a survey, almost 83 percent of the Generation Z in Hyderabad prefer using popular social networking site, Facebook. Those teenagers who were born post-1995 have a strange kind of paradox when it comes to their preferences in technology. As we all know, Facebook is the social media giant and most of the teens have an utmost craze for it. In the study, they also found that Google plus is preferred by 73 percent of teens. Facebook leads from the forefront used by 83 percent followed by Google+.

Hyderabad Generation Z, which means teens born after 1995 have unique preferences in terms of technology. Rather contrastingly, overall, close to 80 percent of teens in the city opt for traditional media outlets like television and newspapers to employ news followed by 42 percent of youngsters who use links from friends or family in Facebook of Twitter.

Digital Customs of Youngsters

Several other interesting behavioural patterns on the digital habits of youngsters between 12 and 18 years in Hyderabad have been revealed in the TCS Youth Survey. We all love to use the micro-blogging site, Twitter while the Teens in Hyderabad have extra passion towards Twitter. Their craving towards the popular site reveals in the survey as almost 45 percent of the respondents had Twitter accounts.

Among them, 68 percent of girls and 51 percent of boys follow celebrities on Twitter. Looking at the results, it shows that girls have more love enthusiasm using Twitter than the boys. Bollywood and cricket have a huge following in India and that is indicated in who the respondents chose to follow on Twitter. Sports stars, celebrities and movie stars were among the most followed.

Bye Bye SMS, Welcome WhatsApp!!

Earlier, people vigorously used SMS (Short Message Service) to keep in touch with their beloved ones and friends. As there is rapid growth in the digital technology, the preferences of the youth also changed accordingly. The teens in Hyderabad says goodbye to the good traditional SMS service. Nearly 66 percent of the teenagers prefer instant messaging platform WhatsApp, followed by Google Hangouts at 12 per cent. WhatsApp can be efficiently used on 2G networks, which are still the majority of connections in India, and that seems to have contributed to its popularity.

In the survey, it has been revealed that, on an average, 75 percent of the teens in the city spend close to an hour online, 37 percent respond to notifications once a day and 31 percent respond within 30 minutes of receiving them. Interestingly, 59 percent of the respondents in the survey said their online activities are monitored by parents and 64 percent said that their parents have access to their online accounts. A whopping 91 percent have said that they shop online and 62 percent buy books online.

In using WhatsApp, boys have the upper hand than girls. It is revealed that boys are much more active online and on social media than girls and most of the sites are accessed on desktops than on mobiles. The highest number of teens using video chats is in Hyderabad which is one of the places with better connectivity in India.
