MS Dhoni Hits Gloves Instead Of Wickets Costing 5 Runs As Penalty To Bangladesh By Team India

Both Team India and Bangladesh were on a high swing from the very beginning of the Champions Trophy. With the series of victories against the rivals, both teams managed to have a fine bait at Semi-Finals.

Despite starting with the fine run rate, Bangladesh’s score run was restricted soon after the series of wickets has fallen from mere 150s. It was bowlers’ show after the first 25 overs in the first innings. And it is Team India’s batsmen who bagged a glorious victory backing up fair runs individually.

Many interesting things happened in the semifinals after skipper Kohli won the coin toss and elected to field first in the overcast conditions and his teams’ ability to chase runs. While India was bowling, a rare thing happened involving a mistake from the MS Dhoni arguably the best keeper in the world at the moment which led to India conceding 5 extra runs deliberately.

This happened in the 40th over of the innings in which Ravi Ashwin was bowling. On the third ball of the over Bangladeshi batsman Mahmudullah played a sweep shot in the long leg region. MS Dhoni realizing the batsman was slow saw an opportunity to create a run out chance and so he removed one of his gloves and proceeded to deflect the ball towards the stumps, something he has a good reputation about.

Law says

As per Law 42 – 17 (c) of the MCC Laws: When 5 penalty runs are awarded to the batting side under any of Laws 2.6 (Player returning without permission), 41.2 (Fielding the ball), or 41.3 (Protective helmets belonging to the fielding side) or under 3, 4, 5, 9 or 13 above, then

(i) they shall be scored as penalty extras and shall be in addition to any other penalties.

(ii) they are awarded when the ball is dead and shall not be regarded as runs scored from either the immediately preceding delivery or the immediately following delivery, and shall be in addition to any runs from those deliveries.

(iii) the batsmen shall not change ends solely by reason of the 5 run penalty.

Sadly, Dhoni only managed to land the ball on his glove which he had taken off. Though the decision went in favor of batsman, it did cost India 5 extra runs.
