Quickly after the announcement of Kalyan Krishnamurthy as the new Chief executive Officer of the Flipkart, people went mad over digging his previous work places and designations.
Mr. Kalyan Krishnamurthy has been the Interim Chief Financial Officer at Flipkart Online Services Pvt. Ltd. from May 2013 to November 5, 2014.
He served as the Managing Director and Director of Finance and Portfolio Companies at Tiger Global Management LLC prior to his current position at Flipkart. From the beginning itself held various senior positions such as Director of Financial Planning & Analysis at eBay Asia-Pacific and Country Finance Director (South-east Asia, Hong Kong) at eBay.
Sources claim that Flipkart didn’t simply pick him because he is smart or good with numbers, Krishnamurthy has contributed his efforts earlier in 2013 and 2016 when the financial conditions if the company appeared running out of the boat.
During his debut into the company in 2013 as an interim finance chief and then as sales head, he won over Flipkart employees with his straightforward personality and deep knowledge of e-commerce. He became a mentor to many senior and middle managers.
Meanwhile, in his second stint, Krishnamurthy, straightforwardly ousted at least four senior executives in the key but struggling retail business that was responsible for generating sales. Two of these executives were Krishnamurthy’s protégés from the first stint—people he had mentored and promoted to important roles.
The message to the rest of the organization was clear: if you don’t deliver, you will be cast away without a second thought.
Despite his bold actions like multiple firings, the desirable effect is observed. It shocked the retail organization, which had become directionless turning around the process that would result in Flipkart outselling Amazon India in the October festival season sales, which can be called as a single combat that Flipkart deliberately played.
After all the possible modifications carried, Krishnamurthy helped end Flipkart’s long crisis and restore confidence in the company that it could hold its own against Amazon.
Krishnamurthy worked at Procter & Gamble, served as a Director of Sunshine Teahouse Pvt. Ltd.
