Hero In Disguise: Asda Delivery Driver Runs Into Burning Building To Save 7-Week-Old Baby
26-year-old Asda delivery driver is now being called a hero after he saved a newborn baby that was trapped inside a building after hearing the baby cry.
Habeel Khan, the delivery driver, was making his way around his usual delivery route when he saw smoke coming out from a house in Stapleford, Nottinghamshire.
When Khan stopped his vehicle to check out if everything was right, the delivery driver saw the owner of the house with her 2 young children.
Khan stopped his van and the woman started to shout that the baby was inside the burning house.
Without thinking twice, Khan jumped out of the vehicle and ran inside the house with the woman.
Khan and the mother found the baby in the room next to the kitchen, where the fire started out.
Khan carried out the 7-week-old out of the burning building.
During an interview with the local news agency, Khan said, “It was a just a normal day at work for me. I was doing my deliveries in the Stapleford area and when I pulled up and looked over to where the customer’s house was I saw loads of smoke just gushing out of a house.”
Khan added, “My natural instinct was to just run across to the house. I could see loads of smoke and lots of people panicking outside.”
Khan shouted “is everyone out of the house?” and that is when the woman along with the 2 children replied “my baby, my baby is still inside the hosue.”
Khan continued, “I don’t think she had realized until then and then she ran back into the house and I went with her. She managed to pick up the baby from a room next to the kitchen where the fire had started, then we ran out.”
Khan stayed with the small family until the emergency responders came and helped the affected family.
After the paramedics and the firefighters came to the house, Khan got back into the van and continued with his job, which is delivering.
After getting to know what Khan did, Asda named Khan as the Colleagues’ Colleague of the Year during the Being Asda Awards 2019.
When asked why he did the act, Khan said, “I didn’t really think anything of it – I just thought I’d helped out, and had done a little good deed.”
Khan added, “I don’t think I have done anything heroic at all, to be honest. Thankfully everyone was okay in the end and the family is back in the house.”
Anthony Hemmerdinger, the senior vice president of Asda’s operations, said what Khan did was remarkable.
Anthony said, “What Habeel did was remarkable and it’s not something we would recommend that our colleagues do, however it’s clear that in this instance his instinct kicked in and he did a remarkable job.”
Khan saved a mother from losing her child and allowed the baby to see the sun rise again for years to come.
Thanks, Khan, you deserve the world.
