Assam: 80 Workers Dead After Consuming Spurious Liquor, The Local Government has Ordered a Probe

Around 80 tea garden workers were named dead after they consumed spurious liquor in the city of Assam, 39 deaths were registered from the district of Golaghat alone. A couple of other workers are currently admitted in the Jorhat Medical College Hospital and at the Civil Hospital of Golaghat, most of them are in a critical stage. A couple of weeks ago, more than one-hundred people died after they drank bootleg alcohol in the northern part of India.

In the plantation, 7 women were dead, the plantation is located 310 kilometers away from the state capital Guwahati.

Some locals said that the tea garden workers drank the spurious liquor on Thursday evening which killed 4 women in just a couple of hours. After 12 hours, 8 deaths were registered and as of now the death toll has increased to 80.

The local police arrested the owners of the illegal liquor factory that is located in the area of Jugibaari, which is really near the garden where the workers work. The owners are identified as Deba Bora and Indukalpa Bordoloi. The police suspect that there are more people that are involved in the making and distributing the spurious liquor.

Partha Pratim Saikia the Deputy Superintendent of the Police said that “We have already arrested two, and are looking for more accused.”

According to the locals of the area, they say that a glass of the liquor is usually sold for Rs. 10 or Rs. 20. The liquor vendor Sanju Orang and his mom Draupadi Orang also passed away after they consumed the alcohol.

Parimal Suklabaidya the Excise Minister of Assam ordered a probe that will investigate the said incident. 2 Excise officials from the area of Salmara have been suspended.

Dhiren Hazarika the Deputy Commissioner of Golaghat said “We will investigate the incident. The guilty won’t be spared.”

Prabin Das the leader of a committee who prohibits liquor, he is also a resident of the area, was attacked by the activists from the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) in Golaghat, this happened after he blamed the excise department of the state as it failed to check the area which was selling spurious liquor.

Prabin Das said that: “It all happens because of a nexus between the excise department and illicit liquor manufacturers.”

The AGP (Asom Gana Parishad) president demanded compensation for all the families of those who died in the incident.
