All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), the technical education regulator, is going to reduce over 600,000 i.e; 40% of engineering seats in colleges over the next few years. The purpose of reducing the seats is the worsening the quality of education and the major issue of vacant seats.
Most of the engineering colleges in India lack infrastructure and quality teachers, which ultimately boils down to the lack of skilled engineers coming out of these institutes. Other than top schools like NIT’s and IIT’s the quality of graduates is very poor and this has led to reduced interest in the subject. Also, leading companies in technology and other sectors too complain about the quality of graduates from the colleges that have mushroomed over the years. They prefer to employ students only from top schools such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and some private institutions. According to the reports he employability of engineering graduates in various states ranges between 12% and 42% also 18.43% of engineers are employable in software engineer-IT services roles and for jobs in mechanical, electronics/electrical and civil engineering, a mere 7.49% are employable.
The Chairman of AICTE Anil Sahasrabudhe said that “We would like to bring it down the colleges to between 10 lakh and 11 lakh (one million and 1.1 million) from a little over 16.7 lakh now. The capacity should come down for the betterment of all—students, education providers and employers.” He also said that “We would like to bring it down to between 10 lakh and 11 lakh (one million and 1.1 million) from a little over 16.7 lakh now.” At present India has more than 3,470 engineering colleges.
