Right after the critically acclaimed movies like ‘Airlift’,’Toilet’ and ‘Rustom’, Akshay Kumar is all set to come up with another social-drama based on Tamil Nadu’s Arunachalam Muruganantham. This film titled ‘Padman’ stars actors Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte.
The story is all about a social activist who revolutionized the concept of menstrual hygiene in rural India by creating a low-cost sanitary napkins machine. Padman revolves around the story of Arunachalam who invented low-cost sanitary pads. Now, as the release date of Padman is approaching soon, the actor thought of starting a challenge and promote the movie uniquely.
In this regard, Padman Challenge took off and it is one of the trending topics on social media today. Arunachalam Muruganantham, a social entrepreneur who invented the machine for manufacturing low-cost sanitary pads, initiated a #PadManchallenge on social media.
While all the actors are going high posting the pictures of them with sanitary napkins, it is comedian Mallika Dua’s post that has taken the Internet by storm. With a single tweet, she won the debate all at once. She on her Twitter handle wrote,
“Always remember, each time you feel weak, each time you feel lesser than your equals, each time you feel you’ve been made to feel lesser for no reason and that the fight has just about begun… When you feel the society and the government have not given you your due, hold up a sanitary pad and post a picture of it on Instagram. You will feel empowered. So empowered. Bye.”
It all started back when in the comedy show, Akshay Kumar made an inappropriate comment, “Mallika ji aap bell ko bajao, main apko bajata hoon,” to which Mallika’s father Vinod Dua, a famous journalist, gave an apt response.
Not just on Twitter, she even took on to her Instagram and said,
“Preying tabloids would be disappointed to know that I wholeheartedly support the idea of a movie like PadMan and the fact that it is being helmed by a massive film star will attract a huge single screen audience because that’s the only way cinema will help destigmatise menstruation for the masses that look at it as a hawwww thing. It’s the Instagram challenge that’s wasting pads, targeting the wrong audience and masking itself as a movement when all it is a marketing gimmick that I find stupid. I hope and pray the movie does exceedingly well, reaches and teaches people and brings about the change that only cinema has the power to bring. Sorry, I can’t feed your hunger for sensationalism there.”
However, for this, she received mixed views from the audience.
