Hartalika Teej Puja Vidhi Significance Date Timings Rituals
Hartalika Teej is the most important festivals celebrated by Hindu women. This is celebrated on the Tritiya of Shukla Paksha in the Hindu month of Bhadrapud. On this day the Hindu married women will follow strict fast for three days continuously worshiping Goddess Parvati. The word Hartalika is a word obtained by joining two words ‘Harat’ means abduction and ‘Aalika’ means implying female friend.
Hartalika Teej is celebrated in many parts of the country but especially in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, and Bihar it is celebrated with more ease. Women of these regions worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati by music and singing songs.
Hartalika Teej Puja Vidhi Significance:
Unmarried girls keep the fast and pray to Goddesses Parvati in hope to get good husbands. Hartalika Teej Vrat is observed by both married and unmarried women. Married women keep the Vrat in order to achieve happy and peaceful married life. Married ladies come back to their parent’s home to celebrate the festival. Some even maintain nirjala vrata (without water) on these three days and refrain from sleep all the three days. This is symbolic of the penance which Goddesses Parvati undertook to get Shiva as her husband. During the Vrat food is being offered to Brahmins and young girls.
Rituals of Hartalika Teej:
- On this day women will worship the idols of Parvati. They celebrate the reunion of Lord Shiva and Parvati.
- This occasion is celebrated by married women with more zeal.
- On Teej, women dress up in new clothes and Jewellery.
- The green color is preferred for this day and tries to dress up unique.
- They prepare varieties of sweets, arrange fruits and vegetables and also decorate the pooja room with flowers.
- Women will do fast on this day not even taking a single drop of water.
- They offer a special sweet made of rice and coconut milk.
- Finally, they go to temples to offer prayers to Goddess Parvati.
