Study Suggests Magic Mushrooms Can “Reset” The Brains Of People With Untreatable Depression

Recent scans suggest that a hallucinogen that is found in magic mushrooms is capable of resetting the brains of people that are diagnosed with untreatable depression.

In the study, 19 patients got a single dose of psilocybin, a psychedelic ingredient.

9 patients ceased to be depressed and experienced changes in their brain activity, which lasted for nearly 5 weeks.

But it also comes with a precaution.

The researches at the Imperial College in London said people should not treat themselves and should meet a doctor first.

Studies have indicated that psilocybin has a role in depression as it acts as a “lubricant for the mind” and allows people to escape a cycle of depressive symptoms.

The only problem is that the precise impact of the drug is still not known.

During the study, researchers at the Imperial College in London took MRI brain scans before the treatment started.

The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports, and it showed 2 major areas that were affected by the treatment.

  • The psilocybin treatment showed lesser activity in the amygdala, which is heavily involved in processing emotions, which includes fear and anxiety.
  • The psilocybin treatment also made the default-mode network, a collaboration of different brain regions, become more stable after the treatment started.

But according to the researchers, larger studies are still needed before the psilocybin treatment could be used as an official treatment for depression.

The studies do indicate one thing, and that is the psilocybin treatment could be used in future treatments.

According to Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris, the head of psychedelic research at Imperial, the depressed brain was being clammed up and the psilocybin treatment reset it.

During an interview with BBC, Dr. Robin said, “Patients were very ready to use this analogy. Without any priming they would say, ‘I’ve been reset, reborn, rebooted’, and one patient said his brain had been defragged and cleaned up.”

Further studies are still needed.

Looks like magic mushrooms do help!
