Hyderabad: 118 Micro-Earthquakes In 14 Days

National Geographic Research Institute has set up multiple tremors and six seismic stations in Borabanda in the area where it experienced about 118 micro earthquakes between 21st October and November 3rd, 2017. A scientist from NGRI said that people might not experience some of the micro-earthquakes as they are less than 0.0 in magnitude.

“About 118 micro-earthquakes have been recorded in total. However, the activity has drastically reduced in the last five days,” the Chief Scientist Srinagesh Davuluri assured Head of the NGRI Seismology Observatory.

He explained that they installed on seismic stations were the epicenter of tremors are recorded. Accordingly, they recorded that the earthquakes between Allapur and Habbe Fathima Nagar.

“The additional micro-earthquakes recorded after installation of seismic stations are mostly those which could not be felt. They are common and the frequency of occurrence and magnitude has both reduced now,” he said.

“The direction is along the North West-South East direction indicating fractures in the orientation,” said Srinagesh.

Srinagesh has also said that people residing around the Borabanda area should have to construct the houses in a much more planned manner. The residents of Habeeb Fathima Nagar say that this activity happening in this area made few people to leave this area out of fear.

“That night was fearful, we all were afraid as to what it was. But, now we have come to terms with it as we consider it normal,” said Sai Ram, who is a resident of Baba Sai Nagar.

“People have literally constructed their homes on boulders. It is nothing but poor urban planning. People need to consider investing more in the engineering of the building rather than decorating it,” he said.
