12-Year-Old Worker Walks 3 Days During Lockdown In India, Dies Just 1 Hour Before Arriving Home
The coronavirus lockdown in India is the largest lockdown in the history of planet earth, and it is indeed helping the government control the cases of coronavirus in the country, however, the daily-wage workers who are not in their home states are the ones that are facing the most challenges.
A 12-year-old girl is the most recent one that has died from trying to reach back to their home by walking.
Jeeta Madkami, who worked in chili fields to earn for her family, died after walking nearly 150 kilometers from Telangana to Bijapur, a district in Chhattisgarh.
The poor girl collapsed and died when she was just 1 hour away from her village.
Jeeta, who was the only child of her parents, started traveling on April 15, 2020, with 8 other women and 3 kids that were working with her.
The group walked for 3 days, cutting through forests so they could avoid the police on the highway.
Jeeta was around 14 kilometers away from her home on the afternoon of Saturday when she felt extreme pain in her stomach, she later collapsed and died.
Her body was brought back to her home in a government ambulance.
According to the doctors, the 12-year-old girl was severely dehydrated and was also malnourished.
BR Pujari a senior district medical hospital, said:
“Her coronavirus tests came out negative. She may have suffered electrolyte imbalance in her body too.”
Andoram Madkam, the father of the girl, said she had been working in Telangana for 2 months.
Andoram said:
“She had walked for three days. She suffered from vomiting and stomach ache.”
Members of the group that she was traveling with said that the 12-year-old girl was not eating well.
After learning about the death of the 12-year-old girl, the government announced that her family will be getting Rs. 1,00,000 as part of the relief.
