An Air India plane crashed in the state of Kerala yesterday after it skids off the runway.
Images and videos that were shared with the public show the airplane broken in 2 parts while landing.
The incident happened at the Kozhikode Calicut International Airport.
18 people died in the crash, which includes both pilots.
30 others are receiving treatment for serious injuries.
CV Anand, Central Industrial Security Force’s Inspector General, said that the data recorder of the flight has been recovered.
Flight IX-1344 overshot the runway in rainy conditions.
Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri told CNN that the plane went down 35-feet into a slope before it broke into 2 pieces.
The flight from Dubai to Kozhikode, which is also known as Calicut, had 190 people on board.
There were 174 passengers, 10 infants, 2 pilots, and 4 cabin crew members on the aircraft.
The 4 cabin crew members on the aircraft are safe.
Experts said that it was fortunate that the airplane did not catch fire after it skidded off the runway following the incident.
Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India, and Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the Foreign Minister of India, sent their condolences to the families of the victims on Twitter.
