24-year-old Kalaiselvi Murugiyan, an Indian National, has been sentenced to serve 2 weeks in jail after she was found guilty in falsely accusing 2 people.
The 24-year-old said that she was forced into prostitution by 2 people, she said that she did this so that her husband could not find out how she was earning in Singapore.
Kalaiselvi Murugiyan pleaded guilty in giving false information to Mohamed Raffiq Mohamed Ishaq, a Police Inspector in the Central Police Division.
The court documents did not state what her work in Singapore was.
On November 1, 2018, Kalaiselvi Murugiyan went to the Rochor Neighbourhood Police Centre to lodge a complaint.
Kalaiselvi Murugiyan was referred to the Central Police Division so that they could record her statement.
The Specialized Crime investigated the claims of Kalaiselvi Murugiyan.
Grace Goh, the Deputy Public Prosecutor said that Kalaiselvi Murugiyan gave false information to Police Officer Mohamed Raffiq Mohamed Ishaq while she was giving her statement at the Police Cantonment Complex on November 1, 2018.
The 2 people, who are not named, were arrested, and after one day, Kalaiselvi Murugiyan admitted that she lied to the police.
Kalaiselvi Murugiyan was not represented by a lawyer, and on Tuesday, she told Christopher Tan, a District Judge, that she does not want to go to jail.
She asked for forgiveness to the 2 people and added that she did this so that her husband could not find out how she was earning in Singapore.
Before the District Judge handed down her sentence, he said: “Valuable police resources were wasted.”
