Chhattisgarh Forest Department Uses Plastic Bottles To Grow Plants After Statewide Plastic Ban

We are in the middle of a crisis, and instead of waiting for others to act, a forest department in India is taking minimal steps to fight climate change.

The Chhattisgarh Forest Department has implemented a new initiative, which is to reuse thrown away plastic bottles to grow saplings and plants.

The initiative begun after the state imposed a statewide ban on the use of plastic.

Used bottles are collected by the women workers at the Ramanijgani Nursery are cut open and used for preserving and growing saplings.

The initiative also offers to pay for the women who are working with the nursery.

Reports suggest the women are paid on a daily basis.

Pranay Mishra, a Forest Officer for the Balrampur Division, said the Ramanijgani Nursery has prepared nearly 3,000 plants that are held by the plastic bottles.

Officer Mishra said the plastic containers are capable of lasting for around 2 years.
