Gujarat: 6 Members Of A Family Commit Suicide After Failing To Pay ₹35 Lakh Debt

Ahmedabad, Gujarat: 6 members of a family were found dead in the Vatva area of Ahmedabad on June 19, 2020, after they failed to pay their ₹35 Lakh Debt because of the ongoing coronavirus lockdown measures in India.

42-year-old Amrish Patel and 40-year-old Gaurang Patel, 2 brothers and their 4 children were found dead in an unoccupied flat that was owned by one of the brothers.

The 4 children were in the age group of 7 years old and 12 years old.

The Patel brothers left their houses along with their children on June 17, 2020, leaving their wives behind.

After the family members failed to return back home, the wives approached the police officers and informed them about what happened.

Inspector DR Gohil of Vatva GIDC police station released a statement about the incident.

Inspector Gohil said:

Our probe has found the family has 45 loan accounts, has 27 credit cards with Rs 12 lakh to be paid, and had also taken individual, home, car loans etc. While one brother drove a taxi for an aggregator firm, the other sibling worked in the fabric industry. We assume their financial status worsened due to the lockdown, pushing them into taking such an extreme step along with their children.

An official investigation has been launched for the incident.
