Hyderabad: Two Dead As Old Building Collapses In Secunderabad

Hyderabad, Aug 2: Two people were killed when an old building collapsed due to heavy rains in Chilakalguda area in Secunderabad, the twin city of Hyderabad. The incident occurred on Monday night when most of the shops in the vicinity were closed. The deceased were identified as Akbar, who ran a chicken shop in the building and his worker Wajid.

According to the reports, the incident occurred at around 11 PM yesterday when a part of the two-storied building in “dilapidated” condition collapsed, resulting in the death of Akbar and Wajid, both in their 40s, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials and eyewitnesses said.

Knowing about the incident, Telangana Excise Minister T Padma Rao, who visited the spot, said in view of rains lashing the city for the past couple of days, this old building collapsed.

According to the minister, the building was very old and GHMC officials have earlier served a notice to demolish the building.

An eye-witness said the incident occurred while Akbar, who runs a meat center on the ground floor of the building, was closing the shop, resulting in on the spot death of Akbar and Wajid, who works at the shop.

A GHMC official said they had identified as many as 16 old buildings in Secunderabad alone that were in dilapidated condition and initiated measures to demolish them.

A case in this connection was registered by the Chilkalguda Police.
