A local BJP leader who is also the president and district leader of the National Teachers’ Union (NTU), the teachers’ wing of the BJP, was arrested by the Kerala police for sexually abusing a 10-year-old student last month.
The police arrested 45-year-old Kuniyil Padmarajan, the BJP leader, on April 15, 2020.
According to reports, Padmarajan was arrested by the police when he tried to escape the Poyilur Area.
According to Thalassery Deputy Superintendent of Police Venugopal, the parents of the 10-year-old student came to the police and reported the incident on March 17, 2020.
The DSP said:
“As per the complaint, Padmarajan had abused the child a few days before January 15, and on February 2. The parents approached the police with a complaint and we arrested him.”
The police recorded the statement of the child, and she was ordered to go through a medical examination.
The doctors who performed the medical examination concluded that the girl was sexually abused by someone.
The police added:
“We had gathered all the scientific evidences against Padmarajan. The complaint says he had taken her to the school bathroom and abused her.”
However, the police did not arrest anyone.
The police were then criticized by the opposing parties of the BJP for not arresting the BJP leader.
The leader was facing charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO).
The Congress party and the Indian Union Muslim League, which are 2 opposing parties of the BJP, protested against the police for not arresting Padmarajan despite having strong evidence and a statement from the 10-year-old child.
After strong criticism, the police arrested the BJP Leader.
