Slippers Thrown At Politician Kamal Haasan While Campaigning In Tirupparankundram

During the campaign of Kamal Haasan, a former actor who is now a politician, in Tirupparankundram assembly Constituency in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, slippers were thrown at him. The attack comes three days after Kamal Haasan said, “independent India’s first extremist was a Hindu”, he was referring to Nathuram Godse, the assassin of Mahatma Gandhi.

11 people, which includes members of BJP workers and Hanuman Sena were named in the police complaint.  The complaint said that 11 people threw slippers towards Mr. Haasan when he was on the stage while addressing the crowd.

Luckily, the slippers that the people threw towards him did not hit him.

The attack comes 3 day after Hasaan gave out remarks on Nathuram Godse, the person who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi in 1947, during a campaign in Aravakurichi on Sunday, he said,

“I am not saying this because this is a Muslim-dominated area, but I am saying this before a statue of Gandhi. Independent India’s first extremist (theeviravaadi) was a Hindu, his name is Nathuram Godse. There it starts.”

Tirupparankundram and Aravakurichi are amongst the 4 constituencies in Tamil Nadu where polls are scheduled on Sunday.

Haasan also stood by his remarks and claims that he state facts during his campaign speech.

He said, ‘What I said is a historical fact. It’s quoted out of context. How can I target a religion? I challenge you to show one instance of me inciting discord.”

Haasan has also filed a petition for an anticipatory bail in the High Court of Madras, he did this while claiming his campaign speech was about Nathuram Godse and not about the entire Hindu Community present in the country.

The Madras High Court is set to hear his petition later on this day.
