Social Media Depression: 18-Year-Old Commits Suicide After Not Getting Enough Likes On TikTok

Salarpur, Noida: An 18-year-old boy committed suicide inside his house during the coronavirus outbreak after getting depressed over the fact that he was not getting enough likes on his TikTok videos.

The announcement was made by the police on Friday.

The 18-year-old boy, whose identity was not shared with the public, lived in Salarpur, Noida, which falls under the jurisdictions of the Sector 39 Police.

The police said the incident was reported on April 16, 2020.

Ranvijay Singh, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, released a statement about the incident.

The statement reads:

“The local police reached the spot immediately after they were alerted about the incident. They broke down the door that was bolted from inside and found his body hanging from the ceiling fan on Thursday evening. During inquiry it came to light that he would make videos on TikTok and nobody was ‘liking’ his videos on the app since past few days. It’s a shocking finding… People from his family and neighbourhood said that he was really worried over not getting ‘likes’ on TikTok and that is why he took this extreme step.”

The teenager was highly active on TikTok, a social media platform that allows social media users to post short clips of themselves performing dances, funny acts, and other things.

The police did not find any suicide note in the house of the 18-year-old.

However, the teenager did tell his family that he was depressed over the fact that he was not getting enough likes and appreciation on the social media application.
