Kanwaljit Singh and Kamaljit Kaur, the owners of Desi Grill in Bairnsdale in Eastern Victoria, are handing out free curry and rice dishes to bushfire victims in Gippsland, Victoria.
The owners have provided thousands of free meals to the affected.
The owners, staff, and other Sikh Volunteers cook curry and rice, which are later distributed to the affected.
The dishes are handed out by the Melbourne Charity Sikh Volunteers Australia to those families that are living in temporary shelters.
Kanwaljit Singh, the owner of the restaurant, has lived in the area for 6 years and said he felt like he had a duty to help the affected.
During an interview with SBS Punjabi, Mr. Singh said, “It’s terrible out there. People are severely affected and they need food and shelter. It’s our duty to serve them when they need us the most.”
He added, “We follow the Sikh way of life. We are just doing what other Australians are doing today, and that is to serve and pray for the people who have been hit hard by these terrible bushfires.”
Singh and his team brought 500 meals on New Year’s Eve for people that are in need.
Singh said, “We have the capacity to cook for up to 1,000 people in a day. But it all depends on how much is needed in the field.”
He added, “We have stock of rice, flour and lentils which we think should be sufficient for the next week or so.”
Singh and his team are capable of cooking 1,000 meals per day.
The restaurant is now stocking up rice, flour, and lentils, which are expected to last for 1 week or even more.
Volunteers from the Melbourne Charity Sikh Volunteers Australia take food trucks to various parts of Victoria to provide food in camps.
Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews visited volunteers to appreciate their help.
This is indeed the Sikh way!
Thank you guys, you have helped a lot of people in the simplest way possible!
