These People Extracted Fibre From Banana Tree And Made Something Worth That’s Grown Into Successful Business Now

Have you ever tried to extract wealth from waste? Well, many of us think of doing it but only a few actually try. Wait, how many of us who tried have been successful in extracting something? Not many I assume, but the people at Eco Green Unit in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu are doing just that, and are doing it amazingly well with nothing but banana trees and areca leaf.

What’s even more commendable about their community-based development program is that these activities are managed by women and people from all strata of society can benefit by participating in various projects organized by them.

Let’s take a learning from them.

Once the bananas are harvested, the fibre from the tree is a waste material.

Machines are used to extract the fiber from the tree.

The fiber is beaten in stone beds, squeezed and then dried.

The dried fiber is used to make mats.

They are also used to make bowls, bags, table clothes and even lightweight clothes.

Areca (supari) leaves are treated as agro waste and here it is converted into wealth.

The leaves are dried and used to make plates, cups and spoons out of them.
