Aligarh, India: The police have arrested 2 men for raping a girl, who committed suicide afterward.

According to reports, the incident happened in the Dadon area of Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh.

An FIR (First Information Report) against the 2 men, whose identities were not shared with the public, has been registered.

The dead body of the girl has been sent for an autopsy.

Aligarh Superintendent of Police (SP) Muniraj said that the victim committed suicide after the panchayat did not take any strict action against the accused.

SP Muniraj said:

Yesterday, police were informed that a rape victim girl committed suicide in Aligarh’s Dadon. Sister of the deceased told police that a panchayat was convened wherein the accused were slapped and let-off. After that, the girl went home and committed suicide. An FIR has been registered and two youth have been arrested. Body of the victim has been sent for postmortem.

An investigation from the police has been launched.

The police said they will take action against the people that participated in the panchayat, who are in charge of settling disputes in villages.

If found guilty, the members of the panchayat could be facing abetment to suicide charges.
