The film revolves around the story of a Dharavi-based don Karikalan, who fights for the people for their right of land against Land mafia and politicians.

Pa Ranjith has directed the film, also stars many Bollywood faces like Nana Patekar, Huma Qureshi, and Eswari Rao.

In the beginning, the film faces some protests in Karnataka because of some controversial statement by the star Rajnikant. Which later on was revealed that it was the distributors who had decided to not release the film because of the strong protest against the film.
However, the film was released in Karnataka.

Kaala has also earned some great reviews by the audience, one person named Krishnan D said “Expected a 75% Thalaivar & 25% Ranjith movie, but turned out to be 50:50. Ranjith pushes his ideology too much movie after movie. In a gangster movie, we always expect a Baasha, but hard to accept that, at 68, Thalaivar can’t repeat it if the script does not give scope. With age, he beautifully gives himself fully to the directors’ desires & still pushes the boundaries. Forever Super Star.”
