A 22-year-old woman was raped by seven men at a guesthouse in Gurgaon’s DLF-IV on Wednesday after one of them took her there, promising a job in his “office”. The woman who was tricked into going to the guesthouse on Wednesday evening is from Burdwan in West Bengal. Police said she is separated from her husband and had emigrated to Gurgaon two years ago in search of a livelihood. She has a son, who lives with her parents in Burdwan.

Desperate to look up for a job, she had gone to the popular Vyapaar Kendra market in Sushant Lok 1—where she currently lives with a friend—on Wednesday evening, the woman said in her complaint. There, she stopped at a juice bar and got talking with a fellow customer, to whom she revealed she was looking for employment.
Soon after, a man walked up to her and identified himself as Kapil Yadav. He told her he had overheard the conversation and had a vacancy in his office and offered to make a formal offer if she visited the office with him. She agreed.

The two left in a white Maruti WagonR.But Kapil drove to the guesthouse in DLF-IV, near Hamilton Court. He allegedly took her to room 304 and raped her. He also threatened to kill her if she told anyone. But he didn’t let her go. Instead, Kapil called six of his friends, who arrived at the guesthouse around 10pm. They raped the woman through the night — one of them brandished a gun in her face and said he would kill her if she uttered a word. They dropped her near her house on Thursday morning.
“She came to the police station around Thursday midnight and narrated the incident. We filed an FIR against Kapil Yadav and six co-accused under sections 376D (gang rape), 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and under sections of the Arms Act,” said inspector Vikash Kaushik, SHO, Sushant Lok police station.

The guesthouse was raided early Friday but its owner hasn’t been traced. Police said a caretaker, Kamlesh, had been given charge of the guesthouse. Police have not made any arrests yet but are questioning Kamlesh for leads. But the question on who will crack down on guesthouses flouting rules across the city remained unanswered. Police commissioner Navdeep Singh Virk said that responsibility lay with the civil administration.
“We are totally committed towards woman safety and have taken several steps to that effect. But the primary responsibility to check illegal guesthouses lies with the corporation or civil administration. Whenever there has been an information of any misconduct, we have raided and taken legal action against guesthouses,” Virk added.
