Ahmedabad Implements Ban on Meat for Ten Days at Its Pace

Gujarat’s state capital Ahmedabad has come up with ban on meat for ten days in its style and pace despite agitations and protests were carried out in the various other states such as Maharashtra and Haryana over this meat ban row. Meat ban has been in the news  headlines after Mumbai city administration has imposed ban on it for four days during the during Paryushan festival of Jains. While due to the back breaking of protests and agitations from various political and civic bodies the city administration of Mumbai has to scale down its imposed ban to two days.

Ban on Meat for Ten Days has Been Imposed in Ahmedabad

Ban on meat on Ahmedabad has been well received by the traders and retailers when the city police commissioner called on for it over ten days doing Paryushan festival of Jain community. Acknowledging the adverse effects and impact of meta ban for ten days in the city during the Paryushan festival, traders have accepted the ban without much protest.

A few traders have launched temporary stalls in some other nearby cities to compensate the loss during the ten days of the meat ban as per the confidential sources. Slaughterhouses and butcheries across the state have been found to be closed on September 10, 2015 due to the ban on meat for ten days. Reporting the current status in the city Ashfaq Qureshi, a live stock trader said “We have stopped supplying livestock in Ahmedabad. We will resume once the Jain festival is over”.

Traders Say Will Abide Rules and Reopen Business After Festival

Ahmed Ajmeri, a meat shop owner whose business runs in Bapunagar locality of Ahmadabad city said that he would be facing a loss of at least Rs 1,500 per day due to the ten days ban on meat for ten days by the local administration. The meat shop owner Ahmed Ajmeri said “It may look like a small sum, but for me, it is a substantial sum. But I will abide by the rules and reopen the shop after the festival is over.”

Ban on meat which is effecting the small business seems to be not affecting any major businesses such as non-vegetarian restaurants in Ahmedabad city which get the meat through major supply chains. Briefing the current circumstances proprietor of a popular restaurant in Shahibaug said, “The ban has not affected us. We procure fresh produce from our regular suppliers.” On being asked about the meat ban, special branch Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP), Vikas Sahay, said, “The meat ban notification is not new. It has been the practice for years now.”

Then again NK Vyas, Ellisbridge Police Inspector said, “Even in absence of a notification, most meat traders in the area choose to shut their shop during Paryushan”. Ellisbridge’s Paldi area which has large Jain community population resident Ashish Shah who is also a member of Jain community said expressed his joy of witnessing non-violence for ten says since due to the shutdown of meat business in the city would let live a few livestock’s.

Animals of Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden Won’t Be Affected

One of the most preferred destinations in the city Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden putting up shelter for many animals wild animals won’t be regarded for the meat ban. On the condition of anonymity an official of Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden said administration of the menagerie has its own way of getting meat during the ten days of ban for the wild animals. Official said “Religion is a concept that applies to human beings. For animals, satiating their hunger is the only religion they know.
