The state of Alabama has passed the new abortion bill which brings a total ban on the procedure in the state, and the doctors who get caught performing the procedure could be sentenced to life imprisonment.
The newly passed law does not include exceptions in rape cases or incest cases.
Under the new abortion bill, the procedure is considered as a crime, and doctors who perform it could get 10 to 99 years in prison.
The only allowed scenario for the procedure is if the mother is in danger or if the fetus is not in the right condition.
The ACLU, which is the biggest human rights organization in the USA, has promised to file a lawsuit that will block the implementation of the new abortion bill, the organization said that the vote showed “how little they (conservative lawmakers) regard bodily autonomy.”
The group added, “This bill punishes victims of rape and incest by further taking away control over their own bodies and forcing them to give birth.”
Will Ainsworth, the Lieutenant Governor of Alabama calls the new bill as a “strong step toward defending the rights of the unborn.”
He added, “With liberal states approving radical late-term and post-birth abortions, Roe must be challenged, and I am proud that Alabama is leading the way.”
Many senators are saying that they are willing to bring the case to the Supreme Court.
Bobby Singleton, a state Senate Democratic Leader said, “You just raped the state of Alabama yourself”.
He added, “You’re saying to my daughter you don’t matter in the state of Alabama… It’s ok for men to rape you and you’re gonna have his baby if you get pregnant.”
Bobby said this while his voice was trembling.
In 2019, 28 states of the United States have introduced more than 300 rules to limit abortion. The numbers were attained from a report that was made by the Guttmacher Institute.
