Olde, a 41-year-old penguin, from the Danish Zoo is officially the oldest penguin in the world after breaking the record.
The penguin that we are talking about is a Gentoo penguin.
Olde is a resident at Odense Zoo, Denmark, was confirmed to be 41 years and 141 days.
She is the world’s most senior old-age penguin.
Gentoo penguins are native to the Antarctic Peninsula and subantarctic islands.
They typically live for 15 to 20 years, but if they are raised in captivity, they are capable of living up to 30 years.
However, Olde has increased the age limit and is currently sitting at 41 years of age!
The good thing about this is that Olde is not the only penguin in the world that had managed to get 40 years old.
In 2015, Tess, a female African penguin, died in 2015 at the age of 40. She was living at the Pueblo Zoo in Colorado, USA.
Sandie Munck and Mette Heikel, 2 zookeepers that take care of Olde, said that the penguin is really quiet and calm.
The 2 said: “She’s very quiet and calm. She’s never one to act out, either on other penguins or zookeepers, and never has been.”
Because of her old age, the penguin gets special treatment over the other penguins that are present in the zoo.
Keepers have to make sure that she gets her portion of fish so she does not have to fight it out with the neighbors that she has, who are young and extremely active.
Olde was hatched at Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland, United Kingdom, on May 16, 1979.
She then moved to Montreal, Canada, where she lived in the Sub-Polar Region exhibit at the Biodome for 23 years.
She then moved to the Odense Zoo in 2003.
She has raised a total of 16 chicks.
