Anushka Gives A Perfect Reply To All Those Who Called Her Character In Sultan As ‘Regressive’

Anushka Sharma knows the power of a story well-told and the actress says her love for cinema is what keeps her motivated and not fears that are part and parcel of every performer’s life.

It has been a good year for Anushka Sharma as both her characters, ‘Aarfa’ and ‘Alizeh,’ from her recent super-hits Sultan and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil brought her critical praise as well as commercial success.

Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma’s Sultan made 600 crores and it wasn’t a surprise at all. In the film, she played the role of wrestler Aarfa, who passes up an opportunity to participate in the Olympics when she learned that she was pregnant. Movie-goers criticized Aarfa’s choice in the film and also Anushka’s choice to play the character.

As an actress, Anushka Sharma’s portrayal of Aarfa was convincing but many pointed out at the blatant sexism in the film. Aarfa gives up on her dreams and chooses motherhood and it became tough for the audience to buy it.

Forgetting and giving up on her dreams to choose something her heart wants is regressive? Talking about the same on Off The Cuff with Anushka Sharma, she said,

I don’t agree with the criticism. The ability to make a choice is also a liberating thing. Are you telling me that there won’t be a woman, a feminist if caught in Aarfa’s situation, not chose motherhood over the career? The ability to make a choice is a liberating factor, you cannot oversimplify things. It’s not like she quit. She returns to wrestling later. I stand by Aarfa’s choice. Also, as an actor, I play characters and they may not have the same views as me. So, what can I not play those roles?
