New Delhi: Soon after the telecom watchdog of India, TRAI’s Chairman made a challenge over Twitter with details of his 12 digit Aadhaar asking if would have any security risk by getting his details leaked, his all personal details were leaked out by a security researcher.
Elliot Alderson is a nickname of a French security expert who uses Twitter handle @fs0c131y, said in his recent series of tweets which caused ripples on the social media which leaked “personal address, DoB, your alternate phone number” and all along that explained to Mr. Sharma, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) chairman, how heavy risk it was to make the Aadhaar number public.
“People managed to get your personal address, DoB, and your alternate phone number. I stop here, I hope you will understand why to make your Aadhaar number public is not a good idea,” Elliot Alderson wrote.
RS Sharma who is very well known for the defense of Aadhaar scheme has been long maintaining that the unique ID does not violate privacy and the government reserves a right to create a database of residents due to the fact that it gives subsidies on state-run welfare schemes.
As a debate rages at the national as well as judicial level over the privacy concerns relating to Aadhaar and made it ways to the Supreme Court, activists and people in general very much fear that the biometric number was harmful to citizens’ privacy.
“My Aadhaar number is 7*************. Now I give this challenge to you: Show me one concrete example where you can do any harm to me,” tweeted R S Sharma, whose tenure ends on August 9.
Earlier to that, a Twitter user had posed a question to R S Sharma to “walk your talk” after the TRAI chief tweeted his interview with an online portal in which he defended Aadhaar scheme and rejected apprehensions that one billion Aadhaar account was vulnerable.
He also claimed that there had been not a single instance of data being breached and had there been any such instance, the entire Aadhaar database would have been vulnerable to threats.
Not many hours passed after the tweet over Aadhaar number, Elliot Anderson replied to Mr. Sharma.
The security researcher posted a picture of RS Sharma with some of the portion of it blackened. Elliot Anderson, who is known to have revealed security loopholes in the system of Aadhaar, posted leaked details of Mr. Sharma’s details with important areas blackened and hidden.
