BJP MP From Assam Suggests Shooting Down Rapists In Public

Assam: As the crime level goes on increasing with the development of technology, the governments in India at the Centre as well as at state level seems to be helpless. All we see after any gruesome incident is high rhetoric. But at the functional level, there is no strong action against the culprits who rape innocent girls and women and go on with their life business without facing hassles. They get out of the ‘issue’ by maintaining political contacts. Others may face few years in jail only to get encouraged for such crimes.

In actuality, there is no strong deterrence under the law that sends a strong message to the evil elements in the society to fear the law. Even after gruesome incident like Nirbhaya, there seems to be no stoppage in these kind of evil acts. All these conditions make a common man or woman think the same way, what a MP now thinks should be done to a culprit who had raped someone.

Mr Ram Prasad Sharma, who is a member of parliament from Assam’s ruling BJP, suggests shooting the rapist in public. This will pave the way for keeping the crime under control. He is a representative from Tezpur in the Lok Sabha. Apart from the above suggestion, he says that there should be ‘shooting squads’ for this.

“Those who commit heinous crimes like rape must be shot in public; this is the only way to stop these incidents,” said Mr Sharma on Thursday. The MP, who holds a degree in law and practiced in the Guwahati High Court before joining politics, said “capital punishment”, is the only way to deal with those who assault women,.

Further speaking to reporters, the MP said shooting squads need to be made to punish rapists and “instill a sense of fear” among people. The Lok Sabha MP also opined that any person who is convicted of molestation should be given a minimum of 10-year jail term.

Mr Sharma became a member of the BJP party in 1991 and won the Lok Sabha election from Tezpur in 2014.

In such an incident on Sunday, a class 5 student was raped and burnt alive in Nagaon district of Assam.

Crime against women is on the rise in Assam in the last two years, as per the reports provided by police records. Last week, a class five student was allegedly gang-raped and burnt alive by four boys in Nagaon district of Assam.  But before her death, the girl mentioned the names of four culprits who committed the crime of which three she knew. The police took all of them into custody.

The heinous crime invited uproar in the assembly of Assam state on Monday. Two BJP legislators, Mrinal Saikia and Shiladiyta Deb, put up the allegation that illegal Bangladeshi migrants were involved in such incidents. The opposition Congress and the All India United Democratic Front or AIDUF slammed the Sarbananda Sonowal-led BJP government, which came into power last year, of failing to maintain law and order situation in the state.
