He claimed that his best efforts to find remedy to the situation has failed as his wife needed to be on her smartphone to keep in touch with her family and friends. “I sent her messages on Whatsapp and knew she had read them because of the latest update on the application but still she didn’t answer him or acknowledged his messages,” said Saudi Husband. The app, which marks read messages with blue tick marks, revealed to the husband that his wife had seen his messages but chosen not to respond. The final straw came after he found her at home watching television, with several of his messages left unanswered. These justifications for divorce may seem completely absurd, but they are valid in Saudi Arabia. Currently, men are not required to provide any legal justification for a divorce to be honored. Women, on the other hand, are only allowed a divorce if there is evidence that her husband has harmed her.
